Do you ever just feel like everything’s normal, but at the same time, it’s not? You may be going about your everyday life, preparing for a big exam at school or uni, struggling to meet an important deadline at work, or running around like a headless chook taking the kids to school and sport, doing groceries, paying bills, cooking, housework . . . the list goes on! There may even be a few extra things you’ve had to deal with lately; perhaps a death in the family, financial stress, or caring for a sick relative. And on the surface, you’re fine. You’re carrying out your tasks, juggling study and work and family and everything else on your plate; people might even think “I don’t know how she does it all.” But part of you knows something isn’t quite right. You could be feeling tense around the neck and shoulders, experiencing headaches, feeling cold, tired, sensitive to light or noise, having bowel issues, problematic periods, or even trouble conceiving. You may even feel like a hypochondriac, that you’re chasing random, unconnected symptoms and going a bit crazy and that all you really need is more coffee. Well, we’re here to tell you you’re not crazy. And you probably don’t need more coffee! If what we’ve just described sounds like you, you may be experiencing Sympathetic Dominance, a state of chronic stress in your body. Dr Wayne Todd (chiropractor), who has 30 years of clinical experience saw patients with these and other symptoms on such a regular basis that he began to connect the dots. That’s when things became less random and he devised a way to move beyond symptom management and get to the root cause of their imbalance. So what is Sympathetic Dominance? Due to a series of built-in triggers, our brains know when it needs to activate the ‘fight or flight’ mechanism, called the sympathetic nervous system. When it activates, it suppresses your digestive, reproductive and immune systems and the repair functions of the body. Under normal circumstances, your sympathetic nervous system reacts to some extreme physical, chemical (foods, and environmental substances) or emotional stress, which is important to allow our body to function in a crisis. But, what happens when this survival mechanism stays switched on or fired up for extended periods of time? It creates a prolonged physiological change that can cause lasting harm.  When this stress response becomes chronic, when your body is reacting as if it is under threat all the time, it may lead to an imbalance that doesn’t allow for healing, resting, digestion and reproducing. Symptoms of Sympathetic Dominance (include but not limited to) Do you suffer from any of the following?
  • Shoulder and neck muscle tightness
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Sensitivity to sound
  • Light sleep and vivid dreams
